Andrei Cherny, a Democrat running for state treasurer, was a guest speaker during the weekly Benson Rotary luncheon, held recently at Butterfield RV Park.

Cherny is the only Democrat running for the state seat, while four Republican candidates are running in the Aug. 24 primary.

Cherny, an Arizona criminal prosecutor, said a lot of work needs to be done to get the state back on track.

Cherny said some of the hard economic times Arizona is facing can be blamed on former state treasurers who took state investments, turned them over to banks and left it at that.

Cherny said presently, the public cannot get a full list of all the companies the state is said to be invested in.

Last week Cherny called on current State Treasurer Dean Martin to reveal a list of Arizona stock holdings.

"We don't know what stocks and corporate bonds 'we the people' of Arizona own," he said. "This is our money - not the government's money - not the state treasurer's money, and we have a right to know how it's being spent. As a prosecutor, I know that sunlight is the best way to guard against corruption in state government, transparency leads to reform and information gives citizens the tools to hold their public officials accountable."

Arizona has failed to capitalize on all of its sunlight, and now, New Jersey and Germany lead the world in solar energy production, Cherny said.

By investing in industry and adding more incentives for companies to relocate to Arizona, Cherny said things will turn around.

"We've been losing hundreds of millions of dollars that could go directly to public schools," he said. "We here in Arizona need to capitalize on what we have. We should be leading in the solar energy industry."

While noting that Arizona ranks first in job loss, Cherny said more needs to be done to keep Arizona's youth here.

Cherny stressed that more oversight is needed, noting that Arizona should not be performing as badly as it is.

"The treasurer does have audit power over the state government," he said. "It's the treasurer's job to see where that money going. To see where the waste is, and where's the management. The last part is to lead in economic issues."

Cherny said the treasurer needs to take ideas to the legislature, state, county and local governments in order to get a working plan.

Cherny said Arizona has lacked an overall economic strategy plan for many years.

"We have only relied on real estate sales," he said. "That hasn't worked out. You can't be a one trick pony to succeed."

Cherny said the key to more job growth will be future tax incentives.

The Republican candidates in the race include Ted Carpenter, Doug Ducey, Barbara Leff and Vayer Verschoor.
