St. David Farmers Market begins May 1
The St. David Farmers Market, sponsored by the St. David School District, and held at the school, will open for its second year on Saturday, May 1 for a six-month season of weekly morning markets.
This farmers market is the only one in the state held at a school. This year the market will involve more students in school organizations such as FFA (Future Farmers of America), DECA (Delta Epsilon Chi for developing marketing, management & entrepreneurship skills) and HFL (Home & Family Life) who take classes in agriculture, the culinary arts and business/computer science.
Growers and hand crafters can participate in the farmers market to sell fresh produce, plants (hanging baskets, houseplants, starts for the garden, seeds, gourds, outdoor plants, cactus and other natives), pecans, pistachios, dried beans and chile peppers, eggs, baked goods, locally raised meats, jams, pickles, honey and hive products and locally handmade crafts for the home, kitchen and garden.
All processed foods, including baked goods, must be made in a licensed commercial kitchen and require annual ($15) food handler's and ($15) vendor permits from the Cochise County Health Department.
Ranchers can sell their meats if they are processed in an ADA or USDA inspected facility and stamped or as whole animals from the ranch. Bakers and canners can rent time at an affordable rate in a commercial kitchen in Benson through the Farmers Market Canners & Bakers Group.
Entrepreneurs of all ages are invited to sell their wares. St. David School students, or 4-H members, can sell eligible products at no charge. Children welcome with parent supervision.
Backyard growers can bring a card table and rent a space for $2.
For more information, vendor application or list of eligible items that can be sold at the market and a vendor application, contact market manager Ron Millet at 221-1074 and stdavidfarmersmarket@yahoo.com.
The season's grand opening will feature a local country band, solar cooking and spinning demonstrations, a petting zoo of baby farm animals, backyard growing information and handouts, hot eats, snacks locally produced produce, foods plants and hand crafts on Saturday, May 1, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at St. David School.
