It's crunch time for the St. David Tigers. On Friday, the Tigers host Heber Mogollon in a Class 1A state quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing into the next round of the playoffs.
The Tigers, who finished the regular season with an unblemished 8-0 record to earn a first-round bye in the state championship playoffs, will look to hold off a Heber Mogollon team that finished its regular season with an 8-1 mark. Mogollon earned the right to face St. David by defeating Superior 67-7 in first-round playoff action last week. In other playoff games this week, top-ranked Joseph City, coached by former St. David coach John Bryant, will play Valley Union, Duncan will face Orme, and Bagdad will tangle with Fort Thomas.
While the Tigers will look to play error-free ball to advance in the playoffs, the opposition no doubt will have St. David's firepower to contend with.
The Tigers, ranked No. 2 by the Arizona Republic behind also unbeaten Joseph City, will look to unleash an offensive arsenal led by quarterback Tyler Davis, running back Dallon Murray and receiver Jordan Tracey.
The trio has proven to be a powerful trifecta for the Tigers led by quarterback Tyler Davis, who completed 62 percent of his pass attempts, 23 for touchdowns. Tracey caught 22 passes for touchdowns for 525 yards while Murray, with 748 rushing yards, is at the center of a bruising running game that gained 1,948 yards. Coupled with the Tigers' aerial attack for 1,313 yards, the Tigers gained a total of 3,261 yards in total offense.
St. David outscored its opposition 466-78 that included lopsided wins over playoff and previously unbeaten Fort Thomas, 60-20, and Valley Union, 52-14.
Which brings us to the Tigers' defensive unit.
Andrew Judd with 52 tackles, Ben Allred and Dallon Murray each with 48, help lead a swarming defense that has stepped up to the plate to stifle formidable opponents.
Even so, first-year Head Coach Tyler Davis sees room for improvement, but expects this week's game to be highly contested.
"They're good ... probably the best No. 2 [North] team in the state," said Coach Davis of Friday's opponent. "We've got them at home, we're going to have to play solid defense, we need to play solid on offense, and we can't afford to have turnovers ... really simple, but from this point on all games are tough."
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
