It's quickly becoming a tradition for Clay Judd's weightlifting team to make their presence known at annual weightlifting competitions. For the second year in a row, the St. David team brought home gold, winning the World Association of Bench Press and Dead Lift National Competition in Phoenix on May 30.
Besides the team title, they won several first-place individual medals and had four athletes break records.
Makay Weitz, broke a state record in the bench press, lifting 82.5 pounds. Weitz is nine years old and weights 65 pounds. Weitz was awarded what Coach Judd called a "beautiful" 4.5-foot sword for the best bench press by body weight.
Brianne Judd broke a state record lifting 93 pounds in the 105-pound weight class, Kade Haymore lifted 118 pounds for a new record in the 123-pound class and Christa Judd lifted 93 pounds for a new record in the 114-pound class.
In dead lifts, Brianne Judd, Christa Judd and Haymore broke more records. Brianne Judd broke the state record in her division with a lift of 187, Haymore lifted 226 for the new record and Christa Judd put up 181 to become the record holder.
Other first-place finishes were turned in by Peyton Haymore, Logan Gneck, Tyler Gneck and Dominick Judd.
Maddison Weitz finished third in dead lifts and Adessa Judd took second in the competition.
Judd has been coaching area teens for many years in St. David, teaching them the art of lifting.
